make a difference ... become an Energy Champion

The Leaky Homes Roadshow offers home visits to local residents in and around Redhill, Reigate, Banstead and Horley.  We use thermal imaging and some basic checks to identify where energy efficiency can be improved.   Delivering the Leaky Homes Roadshow would not be possible without our team of "Energy Champions".  This is a great role for someone with an interest in providing practical help to benefit local people and the planet.

The Opportunity

Role title - Energy Champion

Role location - Redhill, Reigate and surrounding area

Hours - 1 or more evening/morning per week (starting October 2024)

Contract - Self-employed (£25 per survey) or on a voluntary basis

Training - Energy Champion training provided - next training date September 2024

As an Energy Champion you will respond to requests for home energy surveys from local residents.  Using one of our infrared cameras, you will identify heat leaks and carry out some basic checks to identify where residents can improve energy efficiency, cut fuel bill costs and make their homes easier to keep warm.

Each home energy survey is different, but they all follow the same process. The role of an Energy Champion is as follows:

  • Receive referrals from the Project Coordinator and agree a date and time for the survey

  • Prepare for the survey by reading any existing information about the property

  • Visit the home and complete the EARR home energy questionnaire with the householder

  • Take photos using an infrared camera and interpret the results to identify leaky areas

  • Provide a tailored smart pack of small energy efficiency items, from the stock provided

  • After the visit, complete a short report, with suggestions and observations for the householder

  • Review with the Project Coordinator and highlight outstanding EARR actions â€‹

Each survey takes between 30 minutes to an hour to complete.  There is some additional time needed to prepare beforehand and then complete the written report afterwards.  We try to schedule 2-3 surveys close together in the same evening or morning.

About you

We are looking for people who are passionate about energy and about helping people.  As an Energy Champion your main role will be to offer suggestions to a wide range of people, primarily in their homes.  You will need good communication skills, with a caring and non-judgmental approach.

You will be happy to work flexibly and to use your own initiative to provide practical support for residents. Ideally you will have some practical knowledge of basic energy saving and efficiency approaches. This will be supplemented by our training.

Having your own vehicle, or access to one, is helpful for carrying out home visits and you may be carrying light energy efficiency materials (e.g. draughtproofing) with you. However, do talk to us if you don’t have access to transport and we can arrange for you to work locally or with a volunteer who does.

As you may be dealing with vulnerable people in their own homes, you will also need a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate in order to carry out the role.  The DBS check will be arranged by EARR and all results will be confidential and individually considered.

What we offer

EARR offers all our Energy Champions full training for the role.  This will include:

  • Introductory training day

  • 2 hour online training course by National Energy Action - flexible timings

  • Induction visit(s) alongside experienced Energy Champions

  • Ongoing support from the Project Coordinator and Energy Champion Network

For anyone considering a career move into energy efficiency or retrofit we offer a great starting point, providing lots of practical experience.  We can also support you in accessing more advanced training, working towards relevant qualifications.

The Energy Champion role can be undertaken on a voluntary basis or as a paid role.  (Currently about half our Energy Champions are paid and half are volunteers).  If you come on board as a paid Energy Champion, we offer £25 per survey.

Travel and other agreed expenses are covered for all Energy Champions.
