The Leaky Homes Roadshow offers thermal imaging and home energy checks to local residents in and around Redhill, Reigate, Banstead and Horley. Delivering the Roadshow would not be possible without our team of "Energy Champions".
Each home energy survey is usually delivered by a team of two Energy Champions: a Lead Champion and a Volunteer Assistant. We are recruiting for both roles.
Lead Energy Champion
-
Can be undertaken on a paid basis or as a volunteer. We offer £25 per survey plus travel expenses. (Around half of our current Energy Champions are paid and half volunteers)
-
Involves leading the home energy survey and writing up energy efficiency suggestions for the householder
-
Training is required for this role
-
Ideally available for a minimum of two evenings per month November to March. (More evenings/days are possible if you have availability)
Volunteer assistant energy champion
-
A volunteer role - travel expenses will be covered
-
Involves chatting to residents and helping to complete the questionnaire
-
May also use the thermal camera to capture heat loss images
-
Training is available for this role but is not a requirement
-
Ideally available for a minimum of two evenings, following induction survey
As an Energy Champion you will respond to requests for home energy surveys from local residents. Using one of our infrared cameras, you will identify heat leaks and carry out some basic checks to identify where residents can improve energy efficiency and make their homes easier to keep warm.

Each home energy survey is different, but they all follow the same process. The role of an Energy Champion is as follows:
(*responsibility of the Lead Energy Champion)
-
Confirm your availability and receive referrals on agreed dates from the Project Coordinator
-
Prepare for the survey by reading any existing information about the property*
-
Visit the home and complete the EARR home energy questionnaire with the householder
-
Take photos using an infrared camera and interpret the results to identify leaky areas*
-
After the visit, complete a short report, with suggestions for the householder*

Each survey takes between 30 minutes to an hour to complete. For the Lead Energy Champion there is some additional time needed to prepare beforehand and then complete the written report afterwards. We try to schedule 2-3 surveys close together in the same evening or morning.
About you
We welcome people from all backgrounds who want to contribute to their community.

You will be offering energy efficiency suggestions to a wide range of people, primarily in their homes. You will be comfortable talking to people and will have a non-judgmental approach. Some practical knowledge of energy efficiency measures is helpful, but full training will be provided.

As you may be dealing with vulnerable people, you will also need a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate in order to carry out the role. The DBS check will be arranged by EARR and all results will be confidential and individually considered.

Having your own vehicle, or access to one, is helpful for carrying out home visits. However, it is not essential. We can arrange for you to work locally or with a partner who does have transport.
What we offer
If you come on board as a paid Lead Energy Champion, we offer £25 per survey.
Travel costs, and other agreed expenses, are covered for all Energy Champions, whether paid or volunteers.

Full training is available. The training is a requirement for all Lead Energy Champions and is optional for Volunteer Assistants. Training includes:
-
Introductory training day on 12 October in Redhill; (alternative dates 21 Sep/19 Oct in Guildford)
-
2 hour online training course by National Energy Action - flexible timings
-

Energy Action took part in an online "Meet the Organisation" event organised by Voluntary Action Reigate and Banstead. The event video provides some more background about EARR and different ways you can get involved. (The video is about 30 minutes long. No oscar nominations received to date!)
