What is the Loft insulation offer?

Around a quarter of heat loss occurs through the roof in an uninsulated home.

Energy Action Redhill and Reigate has identified that many homes in East Surrey do not have the recommended loft insulation of 270 mm - 300 mm and we are on a mission to change this.

EARR has already provided loft insulation to over 80 homes under the Leaky Homes Loft Upgrade project using funding from UKPN.  Together with our partners Zero Carbon Guil;dford and Circular Dorking, we have now secured additional funding, and are pleased to re-open our loft insulation offer as part of the Surrey HEAT programme.

We can provide up to 6 rolls of free loft insulation to qualifying homes in council tax bands A-D.  (If you are in a higher band we can offer subsidised loft insulation: for council tax bands E-F £10 per roll; for G-H £20 per roll)

To qualify you must meet the following criteria:

  • Your home is in Surrey

  • You currently have an average of 150mm or less of loft insulation within your loft

  • You are able to install the additional loft insulation rolls; or you can arrange for someone to install them on your behalf

How do I take part?

Contact EARR  on info@earr.co.uk or by phone 07707 533587 with your name and address and request a loft check.  We will arrange an appointment to visit your home and check access to your loft, its size and the level of your existing loft insulation.  The Energy Champion will also conduct a short energy survey and can suggest other simple energy-efficiency measures for your home and offer free items from our Smart pack.

If your loft is suitable then we will agree a date and arrange delivery of the loft rolls to your home.  If any payment is due (if you are in Council tax band E or higher) this will be required once you have received your insulation.

Remember it will be your responsibility to install the loft insulation.  (We will provide some guidance for self-installation).

Finally we ask that you send us a photo of the insulation in your loft within 3 months to show that it has been used.  That's it!

FAQs

What type of loft insulation will i receive?

The offer is for Knauf Insulation Super Top Up Loft Roll.  Each roll is 200mm thick and covers around 5.6m².  (6 rolls is sufficient for the average semi-detached).  It is a non-combustible Glass Mineral Wool roll, designed for use in cold lofts.

My home is in a higher council tax band, do i qualify?

Yes - the level of support on offer is based on your Council tax band.  We can provide up to 6 rolls of insulation as follows:

  • Bands A to D (or in receipt of means tested benefits) - free of charge

  • Bands E to F - £10 per roll

  • Bands G to I - £20 per roll

This includes delivery costs.  All council tax bands are making substantial savings as the retail price is £35 per roll.  If you are not sure of your Council Tax band you can check it here: https://www.gov.uk/council-tax-bands

I HAVE A large loft and need more than 6 rolls, can you help?

If you need more than 6 rolls, we can provide extra rolls at £10 per roll (Council tax bands A to F) or £20 per role (Council tax bands G+).

If you currently have no loft insulation, we will adjust the number of insulation rolls to enable you to insulate your whole loft up to the recommended 270mm.

I'm not able to install the loft insulation myself, can energy action arrange installation?

Unfortunately at the moment we cannot arrange installation of the loft insulation rolls - this will be your responsibility.  We can provide guidance and links to videos on how to fit the insulation.  Can you ask friends or family to help?  If not, then ask around for a recommendation for a Handyperson/Builder or try using a site like CheckaTrade to get some quotes.

Some households may be eligible to receive loft insulation through the Great British Insulation Scheme/ ECO (delivered by other organisations).  If this is the case then you would be able to get the loft insulation installed (although you may still need to clear your loft first).  We can provide advice on how to apply, and if needed, help with any forms.

(Please note that the Great British Insulation Scheme/ ECO are only open to households in Council Tax bands A-D or who are in receipt of benefits.  Even if eligible, most households would be required to make a contribution towards their loft insulation.)

The Warm Homes Local Grant could also include the installation of loft insulation, along with a package of other measures.  This will be a means-tested grant only available for homes where the household income is under £36,000 and you have an EPC of D or below.  If you are eligible for this Grant we will provide guidance on how to apply.
