Are you concerned about the cost of living? Or worried about climate change? Do you want to help people to improve the comfort and safety of their homes?
Becoming a HEAT Energy Champion is a rewarding way to help local people reduce their energy bills, improve the comfort of their homes, and cut carbon emissions.
Every home is different, and many residents simply don't know where to start when it comes to saving energy. That's where Energy Champions come in.
What does an Energy Champion do?
Energy Champions visit homes across East Surrey to carry out friendly, informal home energy surveys. During a visit, they look at things like insulation, heating, draughts, lighting and everyday energy use before providing practical, personalised advice.
Sometimes the recommendations are simple – such as fitting draught-proofing or changing to LED bulbs. Other times they involve longer-term improvements like better insulation or heating systems. Every conversation helps someone feel more confident about making their home warmer, healthier and more energy efficient.
Following each visit, the Energy Champion also writes up their suggestions in a short report which is shared with the resident.
Why do people become Energy Champions?
No previous energy knowledge is needed – full training is provided, along with the opportunity to shadow an experienced Champion before carrying out surveys yourself.
For many Champions, it's about helping people in their local community.
"I became an Energy Champion because home energy efficiency seemed like a no-brainer to me - helping people and the planet. It's incredibly rewarding, giving people the confidence to improve their homes. I have also enjoyed increasing my own knowledge." – Nina, HEAT Energy Champion
"I was worried I'd need to be an expert, but the training gave me everything I needed. I love meeting new people and knowing that every visit can make someone's home warmer and more affordable to run." – John, HEAT Energy Champion
Is it right for you?
If you enjoy meeting people, solving problems and making a positive impact, becoming an Energy Champion could be right for you. Whether you're looking to volunteer or are interested in paid opportunities, you'll gain valuable skills while helping households across East Surrey save energy and money.
Our paid roles are on a self-employed basis, paid at £30 per survey plus travel expenses. If you prefer to volunteer, you can either support an Energy Champion or you can lead surveys yourself.
The time commitment is flexible. Our peak survey period is from November to March. Surveys take place either in the morning (9am - 12 noon) or evening (6pm - 9pm). You can choose to do one or more regular sessions each week or do as little as just one session a month.
You will need access to a smartphone or computer with internet to complete the reports and all Energy Champions are asked to undertake a basic Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) police check, (which we can advise on and will pay for.) Having access to your own transport is helpful, but we can allocate surveys close to public transport.

If you'd like to find out more, get in touch with the HEAT Project Coordinator and arrange to shadow an Energy Champion on a home visit energysurvey@earr.co.uk.
Register today for an Introductory Training Day taking place in Redhill on Saturday 17 October 2026 or in Oxted on Friday 13 November 2026. It could be the first step towards making a real difference—one home at a time.
