Updated: Oct 15

We are currently recruiting Energy Champions to help deliver home energy surveys as part of the Surrey HEAT Programme. These are great roles for anyone keen to support their community, as well as those with an interest in energy efficiency and improving the sustainability of local homes

Home energy surveys are usually delivered by a Lead Energy Champion. However we are also looking for Volunteer Assistants who can offer support during the survey. We are recruiting for both roles.

Lead Energy Champion

  • Usually undertaken on a paid basis. We offer £30 per survey plus travel expenses. (There is an option to do the role on a voluntary basis if this is preferred.)

  • Involves leading the home energy survey and writing up energy efficiency suggestions for the householder

  • Training is required for this role

  • Ideally available for a minimum of two evenings/mornings per month November to March. (More dates are possible if you have availability)

Volunteer assistant energy champion

  • A volunteer role - travel expenses will be covered

  • Involves chatting to residents and helping to complete the questionnaire

  • May also use the thermal camera to capture heat loss images

  • Training is available for this role but is not a requirement

  • Ideally available for a minimum of two evenings/mornings, following induction survey

  • Suitable for using your employee volunteering days

A summary of the differences between a Lead energy champion and a Volunteer Assistant

What makes a great Energy Champion?

We welcome people from all backgrounds who want to contribute to their community.

You will be offering energy efficiency suggestions to a wide range of people, primarily in their homes. You will be comfortable talking to people and will have a non-judgmental approach. Some practical knowledge of energy efficiency measures is helpful, but full training will be provided.

As you may be dealing with vulnerable people, you will also need a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate in order to carry out the role.  The DBS check will be arranged by EARR and all results will be confidential and individually considered.

Key Dates in 2025:

  • Saturday 29 November 2025 - Training day for new new Energy Champions in Tandridge

  • November 2025 - Winter surveys start

  • March 2026 - Winter surveys end

To maximise the benefits of thermal imaging, the surveys are largely undertaken in the evening between 6 pm and 9 pm. However, we do also provide some day time surveys, usually first thing in the morning.
